Essar steel ends up in the Fords that the people of our community drive everyday. Essar supports not just our vibrant community, but other North American communities. THE WALL!

My family came here in 1954 where my dad took a job working at the plant. Prior to that he worked for the ACR in Hawk Junction. I was raised on steel plant dollars. I would like to see the local steel industry do better because it's taken it's toll. So many like myself are unemployed with an unknown future. Let's hope we can see some change soon because I born & raised in this city and would like to stay.

Susan Myers

Most of my friends Dads worked at the Steel Plant but my Dad was struggling to start up his own lumber business - in the 50's. Steel gave our community a strong economy so people could build homes (with lumber). Steel touches everyone.

I love being a Saultite, we are surrounded by breath taking beauty :) We are small but mighty. Enlightened by many many talents; sports, music and the arts! A colourful place to live, learn and play!

We moved here 3 1/2 years ago to be closer to family and because we couldn't afford to retire in the Toronto area. We have made more friends, gotten to know more neighbour's and had the best medical care than all of our 27years living in the same location in southern Ontario. SSM is the BEST place to live!!

I am proud to be a resident of Sault Ste. Marie - a community that has great momentum and a lifestyle second to none. My family came to the area in the 1800's and were able to help be part of the growth in Sault Ste. Marie because of industry and the steel mill. It is my goal to ensure that my kids have the same opportunity to make this city their home. Thanks to the Chamber and its partners for building this campaign. Spread the word!!! Get involved!!

I love the Soo for so many reasons! Because I was born and raised in Soo Michigan, driving across the bridge to the BIG city of Soo Ontario was such a thrill ! There was a macdonalds and a mall! What more could a teenager love! Now 3 out of my 4 kids live and work here and I am busy with my promotional business. I love our friendly neighbors, our beautiful golf courses and hiking trails not to mention amazing restaurants!!

I moved to the Soo in 1998 after living in Calgary for eight years and being born and raised in Toronto. While it did take a little while to feel at home and find my way, the many kind, caring and wonderful people I have met here, that I am now proud to call friends, the natural beauty of this area and the comparable lack of traffic issues and big city problems are all a part of what has really made the Soo my home. Where ever you go in this city you'll always find a friend or a friendly smile on the face of a local and a potential new friend. Its fun to travel and visit other places and return to my former cities from time to time, but there is always a sense of relief when the plane touches down in Sault Ste. Marie and I know I'm home. Thank you Sault Ste. Marie!

I am very proud to say that I was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie. People are so outgoing, friendly and genuinely kind. I sincerely appreciate the surroundings...the locks...the boardwalk...the hub trail...Hiawatha. ..farmer bobs...the mill just north...the pictographs...bathtub island...Catherine's and the list goes on. Truly an awesome city and I would never want to live anywhere else.

After completing university, I returned to my hometown of Sault Ste. Marie where in which I was able to launch a small business and begin my career as an educator. Although the community has suffered several economic hurdles, the Soo continues to "bounce back" and showcases resiliency. It is one of the main reasons why I decided to return to the community.

You can walk down the street and make eye contact with a sooite and not worry about it...(don't try that in Toronto) if you smile at someone, they smile back...complete strangers have offered me help when needed ...Proud to call the Sault Ste. Marie People my home.

We are a wonderful community. I grew up in the Soo, left for school, but ended up coming home and now live, work, play and am deeply invested in this community. We have many of the amenities of a city, but with a small-town feeling and amazing access to nature at it's finest. I agree, Steel has been an essential part of our history, will continue to be a part of our future. However, we need to invest in diversifying our industry - most, if not all, of one-industry towns are dying or dead. Let's leverage our opportunities: tourism and education. We are the "elbow" of the North, and our unique geographic position should be an asset to diversifying our economic centres. Let's work together to make sure all of Canada knows we are: Sublime Sights | Superior Schooling | Steel Strong

My top 10 countdown to why I love living in the Soo: 10. Comfortable distance to other larger centres. 9. Work was always within walking distance. 8. There is more greenery here than concrete. 7. It is a very artistic community. 6. Kids have opportunities to pursue sports, music and the great outdoors. 5. The entrepreneurial spirit is very much alive. 4. Community is large enough to maintain privacy but small enough to feel a sense of community. 3. There is a growing diversity in the population and the potential for greater cultural richness and better understanding. 2. An agreeable climate for a lover of the 4 seasons. A warm summer, a colourful fall, a snowy winter and a welcoming spring. But my #1 reason for making the Soo my home is: In the Soo, I feel I have the freedom to be myself. I have access to all the tools I need to nurture a strong sense of well-being and appreciation for the life I choose to experience.

Born in Ottawa and transported here 3 days later! I feel so blessed to be raised here. We went home when the street lights went on and everyone in our neighborhood knew us. We played in gullies and woods. We were free to play all day! We grew up with Bon Soo, Rotary and Santa Clause parade as must attends. It was awesome. I can walk the dog on an amazing boardwalk and our waterfront is beautiful. We are very lucky to be close to amazing scenery to the North and great shopping to the South. The Sault has had its' challenges but we pushed through and I am confident that we have an amazing future!! Great to call The Soo - HOME!

I have lived all my life here in the Soo, we have the greatest people...warm much to do....inland lakes for camping, fishing, boating, Agawa much more....moutains...bush all year round...can't ask for Sault Ste.Marie...HOME

I feel so blessed to be born and raised in this beautiful community. On my 10 minute drive to work I get to see our beautiful waterfront, on my lunch I can talk a walk on our amazing boardwalk, watch people fishing, boats going by and take in our clean air. Every weekend we can jump in our motor home, drive for 20 minutes and be surrounded with incredible beauty and clean water to swim in. As an entrepreneur the possibilities are endless. I am part of an amazing group of likeminded female entrepreneurs in the Soo who meet regularly to support each other and share our knowledge. There is always so much to do, events, plays ands arts. After work I can enjoy a walk on the hub trail anywhere in the city and see such beauty right in town! I love that we are big enough to have everything we need but small enough to live free of fear of going out at night, that we still stop our cars and men take their hats off when a funeral procession goes by. I love you Soo!!

After years of living all over our beautiful country (and abroad ) I realized that everything I needed was right here at home in Sault Ste Marie. The affrordable cost of living and strong sense of community has provided me with truly exceptional opportunities as well as a wonderful way of life. Jane McGoldrick

After living away for many years, we recently moved back to be closer to friends and family, and we missed the Soo community. Seeing the Soo “from the outside” gave me a greater appreciation our city. My father came to the Soo from Italy in his teens, eventually finding work at the steel plant where he worked for nearly 40 years. My parents and uncle were also proud local busines owners of Vincenzo's Restaurant downtown for 20+yrs, and the Chamber and community were always very supportive! #wearethesoo #youarethesoo #supporthesoo

It is most imperative that we, the citizens of SSM stay committed to our steel industry. As much as we are slowly succeeding in our plans to evolve, steel is still an important part of our fabric. Let's remain vigilant.

My grandfather was an Algoma steelworker many years ago, so I have that connection. Having lived and worked in several cities around the province, I was glad to return to the Sault. The community offers a great deal including an affordable cost of living and great outdoor activities!

I came in 1992 when the steel plant was in dire straights. I believed it would move ahead and so I moved to the city. It has had challenges but the city and the steel business show amazing resiliency. I have confidence in the future!

The Soo has been my home for most of my life. My Grandfather and my Father both worked at the Steel Plant. My family has been in business (various sectors) all of my life. The Soo is a wonderful community of committed individuals and an abundance of talent. it is a Great Place to Live.

I was born here. I ve live elsewhere, but the Soo will always be home. The steel from Algoma has sustained so many families over generations. It would be a shame for it to end.

Joseph Coccimiglio

The employees of Algoma Steel have been the backbone of the plant for over 100 years. They are a family on a mission to make quality steel at a competitive price. Having worked there for 40 years I can say I have seen the dedication and experianced it first hand. Joseph Coccimiglio

My grandfather Mike came to Sault Ste. Marie a long time ago to work in the Steel Industry for which he worked for 40 years. Without that industry, I may never have been born here, may never have had children here and may never have started a business(Northern Superior Brewing Company) with my friends that provides employment for more Sault Ste Marie residents.

Judith Bower

My husband worked for Algoma Steel for almost 30 years, and together we raised our family in the beautiful city of Sault Ste. Marie.

As someone who grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, moved away for a few years before coming back, I have witnessed SSM under challenges in the past, but we as a community persevere and move forward. Now is the time to come together as a community and build positive momentum for a bright and prosperous future - working with our existing strengths and taking new opportunities be an even stronger Sault Ste. Marie!

Katie Blunt

Our families are the life blood of this community. Events such as Rotary Fest bring us together and breath life into the downtown. I am proud to be a Sooite and I love my city.

Joe Krmpotich

As a third generation steelworker I'm very proud to support this initiative. Thanks to Algoma Steel and the United Steelworkers our family can enjoy a decent pension on our retirement. This is my home and I'll plan on staying here for life.

Christian Provenzano

My Nono was a steelworker and my grandfather was a baker. Between the two of them they gave my family what it has today and in no small part because of the nature of our community. Sault Ste. Marie is a great place to live, learn and raise a family. Come here and you will learn about resilience, community, family and friendship.
